"The Gympie Times", Friday 22nd August 2006 Dance
performance a matter of 'soul' Now in its 18th year, the invitation-only concert is held for charity and regularly attracts large audiences. It features professional dancers from the greater Brisbane area as well as performers from as far afield as Byron Bay, Gladstone and Toowoomba. The event is run by the Academy of Middle Eastern Dance, a composite of all the major belly dance schools in the Brisbane area. The Soul Fire dancers will be performing an original choreography accompanied by the MeAttaa Middle Eastern drummers. Troupe leader and instructor Anita Ferguson said she was proud that Soul Fire had been given the opportunity to perform at the concert. "This is the biggest event on the bellydance calendar," she said. "We've worked hard to perfect our performance, but we've also had a lot of fun in the process." The performing troupe consists of six dancers and four drummers, with Anita's husband Terence leading the drummers. The dancers will wear exotic sequined costumes from Turkey while the male drummers will sport the distinctive Arabic Garb that turns heads wherever they go. The Soul Fire Dancers are passionate about their art form and have performed regularly in Gympie and throughout the region. "This year we've danced as guests at belly dance concerts in Maryborough, Noosa and Caloundra," Anita said. "We've also performed at the Gympie Show, the Cooloola Culture Festival and at the Disability Action Week gathering at the art gallery and we're looking forward to dancing at the Tin Can Bay Seafood Festival in September." The Soul Fire ladies are also working on their end-of year concert, which will be held on November 12 at the Gympie Civic Centre. |
